Advantages of learning a foreign language

As you know, I could not be teaching French if I was not passionate about languages. I also practice Spanish up to three times a week and, living in the UK, I practice English every day. There is something about learning other languages that really makes me happy.

But, what are the advantages about learning other languages?

First, of course, it allows you to really experience the culture of the country itself, to immerse yourself. You can exchange with locals. It is an activity which boosts your confidence as well as gives you a healthy challenge.  

And I am not the only one who sees benefits to learning another language. Many research activities have been carried out over the years which have unveiled many advantages.

On a health level, it has been proven that people who can speak more than one language possess more grey matter than those who only speak one language, helping to keep Alzheimer and other similar illnesses at bay for longer.

What about day-to-day life, does learning another language has an impact? According to science it does. By speaking two languages, or more, your brain learns how to switch from one language to the next without you thinking about it. This skill allows your brain, in turn, to develop its multitasking side as well as increasing your attention span.

Another advantage shown by research groups is that people who speak more than one language are more aware of certain social cues which help them to be better at decision making.

So, to summarise, learning another language might seem like a challenge at time but only has advantages in the long run, whatever your age.
